Hydro Energy Feasibility in Midlothian

HYDRO ENERGY FEASIBILITY IN MIDLOTHIAN

A one day conference organised by the
Midlothian Federation of Community Councils
Edinburgh College Midlothian Campus
Dalhousie Road, Eskbank, EH22 3FR
Saturday 8th November 2014, 9.45 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What is hydro energy?

Hydro energy – the generation of electricity from the power of water and gravity – is taking off in the UK. As part of the drive to reduce our dependence on climate-damaging fossil fuels to generate our electricity, hydro offers carbon-free and sustainable energy. Hydro power is flexible – it can be generated from sources ranging from quite small burns right up to major projects at dams and reservoirs. The smaller projects are ideally suited to community-based and community-owned schemes.

What can we do to explore the potential for hydro energy in Midlothian?

Midlothian has significant hydro power potential, with two substantial rivers running through the county. The North Esk provided hydro power for much of Midlothian’s paper, explosives and other industries over hundreds of years. The South Esk has several former mills and a number of reservoirs with a significant head of water.
There are numerous examples around the UK of modern hydro power technology being successfully established in areas that require sensitivity to environmental impact, leisure access and cultural heritage. Hydro power from Midlothian’s river and reservoir assets has the potential to deliver significant savings in greenhouse gas emissions, the creation of local jobs, innovative community-based ownership and control and the enhancement of former mill and industrial sites as community and visitor attractions.

The aim of the conference

Midlothian’s Community Councils have collaborated to organise this conference with the aim of bringing together technical experts, funding and support bodies, community organisations and Midlothian Council to find out what we need to do to develop hydro power in Midlothian and how communities can get involved.

  1. […] Next Saturday I am talking at a local free conference organised by Midlothian Federation of Community Councils on hydro power. The conference is to encourage community groups to consider installation hydro installations in their areas, to offset their Carbon footprint. Whilst hydro has some large start up costs, the benefits are felt for many years to come, and several community groups in Scotland have now embraced this as a serious option for electricity generation. I hope I can help motivate folk to consider hydro! Take a look at https://midlothianfcc.wordpress.com/2014/10/03/hydro-energy-feasibility-in-midlothian/ […]
